The Swiss Government Excellence Scholarships for the academic year 2025-26 will start accepting applications from early August 2024. Each year the Swiss Confederation awards research scholarships and Arts scholarships to foreign students from more than 180 countries to promote cooperation between Switzerland and other countries. This one is a popular Scholarship to study in Switzerland. The Scholarship is sponsored by the Federal Commission of Scholarships (FCS).

Swiss Government Excellence Scholarship 2024-2025 is a fully funded scholarship for international students. This scholarship is offered for masters, PhD and postdoctoral studies. This scholarship provides a monthly payment, exemption of tuition fees, health insurance, airfare and housing allowance.

The Swiss Scholarship is sponsored by the Federal Commission of Scholarships (FCS) in collaboration with the Swiss government. Types of Scholarships Under the Swiss Government Excellence Scholarship Program

Research Scholarships: The research scholarship (research fellowship, PhD, Postdoc) is available to post-graduate researchers in any discipline (who hold a master’s degree) to pursue research fellowship, PhD,  and Postdoc.

Research Fellowship: This allows applicants to undertake research in the domain of their Ph.D. at one of the 10 Swiss cantonal universities.

  • Target Group: Postgraduate researchers from all fields as well as young medical doctors.
  • Criteria: Applicants have a Masters degree or equivalent. A research proposal including a timeframe. Mandatory letter from an academic host professor (including their short CV).
  • Duration: 12 Months

PhD Scholarship: This allows applicants to undertake a PhD.

  • Criteria: Master’s degree or equivalent university degree.
  • Duration: Upto 36 Months.

Post-Doctoral Scholarship: This allows selected applicants to undertake a PhD.

  • Target Group: Highly qualified early career scientists at the postdoctoral level.
  • Criteria: PhD degree achieved
  • Duration: 12 Months

Art scholarships: Art scholarships are open to foreign art students wishing to pursue an initial arts master’s degree in Switzerland.

  • Universities: The Art scholarship can be taken at any Swiss conservatory or university of the arts.
  • Criteria: Highly qualified young artists without a Master’s degree. Must have a Bachelor’s degree or equivalent.
  • Eligibility: The Art scholarship is available to only a limited number of countries.

ELIGIBILITY CRITERIA

  • Required Language: English.
  • Eligible Countries: All world countries.
  • Master’s degree or equivalent university degree achieved before 31 July 2022 (degree certificate) recognized by the Swiss university. As a proof, the degree has to be submitted to the Federal Commission for Scholarships before the start of the scholarship.
  • Applicants must be born after 31 December 1987.
  • Applicants who have been in Switzerland since more than one year at the beginning of the scholarship in September are not eligible.
  • Applicants must provide a letter from an academic host professor (including her/his short CV) at the chosen Swiss university confirming why she/he is willing to supervise and support the research. Without such support, the application will be rejected.
  • Applicants must have a research proposal including a time frame. This is the centerpiece of the application. The applicant must devote all required attention to it.
  • Applicants must be in command of the necessary language skills required for the research/studies.
  • Applicants who have already benefited from a Swiss Government Excellence Scholarship are not eligible to apply for a second scholarship.
  • Scholarship holders are expected to move to Switzerland during their grant period.

Documents Required for Swiss Government Excellence Scholarships

  1. A CV is attached.
  2. A motivational letter.
  3. Create a research plan of no more than 5 pages.
  4. Two sets of documents should be submitted one original and one copy.
  5. The original signed documents, as well as two letters of recommendation, must be included in the first set.
  6. Except for recommendation letters, the second set must contain a duplicate of the previous set.
  7.  A photo-enhanced FCS form that has been written and printed.
